Thunderstorms… they can be a problem. Florida may be known as “The Sunshine State” but the state not only receives a lot of sunshine, but also a lot of rain. The rain may affect your day, but there are some ways that you can battle the rain and still enjoy your day at the parks.

Ride an indoor attraction

The best possible way to escape the rain and still enjoy your day is by riding an indoor attraction. All of the outdoor rides like Doctor Doom’s Fearfall, Dragon Challenge, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls, etc. will close if lighting is within close proximity of the park, however, all indoor attractions such as The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Revenge of the Mummy, E.T. Adventure, etc. will remain open.

Now you may think that because all of the outdoor attractions will be closed that all of the indoor attractions will have longer lines. Depending on when you visit and how bad it is raining, that may be true. However, at most times the crowds will leave because of the rain. Little do they know that Florida storms usually don’t last very long (I’m not saying the storms are always short as there have been days where it has rained all day long). If the crowds thin out, there is a chance that the lines for the indoor attractions will have shorter wait times, which means you get to spend less time in line and more time riding.

Enjoy the many live shows at the parks

Universal Orlando isn’t all about the rides, they also have many live shows throughout their theme parks. At Universal’s Islands of Adventure, you can find shows like The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad. Over at Universal Studios Florida, you can find shows like Beetlejuice’s Graveyard Revue, Animal Actors On Location, Fear Factor Live and Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show (my personal favorite)! These shows are all great and many of the other shows listed on the park guide still go on even during the rain. However, shows that take place outdoors like Universal’s Superstar Parade, Universal’s Cinematic Spectacular: 100 Years of Movie Memories, and several other outdoor shows will be delayed or canceled.

Most of the shows have show times so I recommend planning your day around the shows if it is predicted to rain all day or most of the day.

Have an early dinner

Typically, thunderstorms won’t hit until the afternoon and usually end shortly after. However, if you happen to be visiting on a day where it may rain most of the day, eat an early dinner. There could be a chance that later in the day the sky will finally clear up and the outdoor attractions will reopen. By eating an early dinner, you’re ahead of the game. If the rain ends, rather than wasting your time eating like most guests, you could be basking in the sun and riding more attractions.

Ride an outdoor attraction

As previously mentioned, Florida thunderstorms tend to clear later in the day though there are some days where the storm lasts all day. If the storm has finally passed, take advantage by riding the outdoor attractions when they reopen. By doing this, you may likely avoid many of the crowds who have either left the park, are eating dinner, or are doing other activities at the park. If you’re lucky, you may be first in line.
